Power Down. Are you ready? – Highlights from the Wake-Up Breakfast at the European Parliament

November 7th, 2025

On 16 October, policymakers, industry representatives, and key stakeholders gathered at the European Parliament for the “Power Down. Are you ready?” Wake-Up Breakfast to discuss how Europe can strengthen its resilience in times of crisis through a coordinated approach to emergency preparedness.

Hosted by the European Candle Manufacturers Association, EDANA (the voice of nonwovens), Natural Mineral Waters Europe, and EPBA-Consumer Batteries Europe, under the patronage of MEP Ingeborg ter Laak (EPP, Netherlands), the event highlighted the crucial role of essential goods in supporting households when critical infrastructure fails. Candles, hygiene items, portable batteries, and safe drinking water were presented as indispensable elements of a shared European emergency kit.

The discussion underlined how recent crises have exposed the vulnerabilities of modern societies. Flooding in Central Europe, power blackouts in the Iberian Peninsula, and wildfires in Southern Europe have all disrupted access to electricity, clean water, and essential supplies. These events demonstrated that small, simple preparations can have a major impact on safety and comfort when crises occur.

Speakers and participants exchanged views on how the European Union can take a more coordinated approach to preparedness by encouraging citizens to keep essential items at home. Such initiatives could complement broader EU efforts on civil protection, risk management, and supply chain resilience.

The event also highlighted the responsibility and commitment of the represented sectors to contribute to Europe’s resilience. The participating associations, each representing products that form part of an emergency kit, emphasised the importance of ensuring availability, safety, and awareness of these items. By working together, industry and policymakers can help European households become more self-sufficient and better equipped to face unexpected disruptions.
