Batteries Regulation
Battery collection targets
Across the EU, used portable batteries are collected and recycled so that valuable materials such as metals and plastics can be recovered and used in new products, including construction materials, galvanisation processes, or everyday plastic items.
The Batteries Regulation gradually increases the collection targets for used batteries to 63% in 2027 and 73% in 2030. Batteries are collected separately, and collection systems are available to end-users free of charge and without an obligation to buy a new battery.
EPBA - Consumer Batteries Europe has consistently highlighted that higher collection targets must reflect real-world conditions. Many portable batteries remain in use for longer than expected, are stored at home, or leave the system inside electronic devices, meaning not all batteries placed on the market are quickly available for collection.
We therefore support the Available for Collection methodology, which bases targets on batteries that realistically become waste. This approach maintains environmental ambition while making targets more accurate, credible, and achievable.
